What is an Ecovillage?

First of all we are going to explain what an ecovillage is, because it is possible that many of you do not know it and you are imagining things that may not be.

An Ecovillage is a self-sufficient community made up of several people and families, who live together in the same settlement seeking the good of people and especially the environment, promoting cooperation, renewable energy, self-consumption, ecological materials and others.

In general, the people who make up the ecovillages emigrate from the big cities, tired of the fast pace, unbridled consumption, pollution and other factors, to lead a quieter, more basic life, with less agitation, with less consumption and above all, being aware of each action they carry out and its impact on the environment and society in general.

Ecovillages were first recognized internationally in 1995 by a meeting of ecovillages held in Scotland, where the Global Ecovillage Network (GEN) was born, which laid the foundations of the current movement and is a point of connection between the large number of ecovillages in the world.

And how are the ecovillages in Colombia?

Our country has not been oblivious to this movement of ecovillages Colombia, moreover, there is the Colombian Network of Ecovillages and Alternative Communities that brings together around 17 ecovillages and alternative settlements in the country to educate, investigate and disseminate sustainable and regenerative lifestyles.

Since 2006, this Network convenes every year the Colombian Ecovillage Meeting, known as “Call of the Mountain”, where for several days they meet to integrate visions, share knowledge, experience different ways of living, find solutions to solve basic needs and much more.
