What does organic agriculture look like in Colombia?
The truth is that in recent years many farmers have decided to switch to organic farming and ecological production of their crops.
This is because, internationally, buyers are able to pay up to 40% more for organically produced products (in the local market they can be sold for up to 10% or 20% more).
It is estimated that more than 50,000 hectares are cultivated organically in our country, a fairly large amount, but that can be improved to reach, for example, one of the countries in the world with the highest organic production: Australia (with more than 20 million hectares).
What is the current problem with organic agriculture in Colombia?
The big problem with organic agriculture in Colombia today is that there is an impressive demand from foreign countries and that production is not enough to cover that demand.
Therefore, very little of these foods remain in our country to be used by Colombians (it is said that less than 10% of production remains in the country).
What could help improve this problem?
It is necessary that both government entities and small, medium and large producers take the initiative and organize themselves in a better way to be a united front and turn Colombia into one of the great powers in the world when it comes to organic agriculture. .
We have the potential in our country, the land is very good, the products harvested are much better and the quality of the people and workers in the field is truly enviable.
That is why we only need the union of organizations, producers and experts in ecology to meet international demand and be able to leave a higher percentage of the production in Colombia, for the consumption of Colombians.
It is also important to know everything that surrounds national organic agriculture, technical bases and the current situation, that is, to understand which are the organizations that can regulate and help organic production, the laws and regulations that must be followed and the certifications that must be obtained. so that organic products are guaranteed.
Is it easy to obtain the necessary certifications to ensure that the product is organic?
It is essential that the organic products that are produced in the country (both those that are exported and those that are sold in the local market) meet all the necessary requirements to guarantee those who consume said products that they are effectively free of chemicals.
The entity that regulates all organic production in our country is the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADR).
The ICA (Colombian Agricultural Institute) is also responsible for granting authorization for the use of chemical-free instruments and supplies on land and plantations.
It is also necessary to meet the requirements that international entities have on organic products, for this, they must know the requests of organizations such as the ONUAA, MAELA, FIBL, among others.
Success stories of Colombian organic products in the world
The organic coffee produced in our country has had a great impact in several countries around the world, but in China it was a sensation when it was presented at a very important business meeting worldwide.
But these are not the only success stories of our organic products abroad, we also export products to the United States, Germany, France, Japan, the United Kingdom, Italy and many other countries around the world.
What organic products are mostly produced in our country?
The leading product in organic production in our country is coffee, since approximately 40% of the ecological hectares have coffee plantations.
Then we can find the wild palm that has almost 20% of the production. In third place we find the azaí with 10% of the hectares. Sugar cane and oil palm also have percentages close to 10%.
Then we can find less important products, foods or crops such as: tropical fruits, sugar cane, plantain or banana, cocoa, wheat, rice, green grains, quinoa, livestock, vegetables, among others.
It should be clarified that these data are approximate and that we do not yet have the tools to measure exactly the hectares and quantities that currently produce organic products in our country, but the data is consistent and could only vary slightly depending on what we previously discussed.
Currently organic agriculture in Colombia is not bad, but it can be greatly improved and we have great opportunities to exploit this market taking into account two things: Organic agriculture can be very good for the country’s economy and generate a lot of profit.
Along with the improvement shown by bringing more money into the country, we would also notice an improvement in health by consuming chemical-free foods that are much healthier and by taking better care of our land.
