Renewable energy is produced from sources that do not run out or can be replenished within a human’s lifetime, unlike non-renewable sources like fossil fuels.
The most common examples of renewable energies are:
• wind power, which relies on the sun’s heat to drive winds, the energy of which is captured by turbines.
• Solar energy, directly captures sunlight using solar technologies.
• geothermal, uses the internal heat of the Earth
• biomass
• hydroelectric, depends on the flow of water
Renewable energy systems are an important topic of discussion for the world’s energy future for two main reasons:
1. They provide energy from sources that will never run out.
2. They produce fewer greenhouse gas emissions
Despite the above two reasons, there are still some difficulties such as technological barriers, high initial capital costs, intermittency challenges, among others, with some of these renewable sources to deploy them on a large scale.
