Bioconstruction seeks the integration of construction in the environment, observing the context where it will be located and understanding nature to achieve the minimum impact on it. Bioconstruction techniques are selected depending on the environment, the landscape and the society where it is implemented.
The most important characteristics of Bioconstruction are:
Use of natural materials. As far as possible the materials should be natural and belonging to the place of construction. The extraction, handling, transport and placement of the same to the work site must be respectful of the environment. These can be wood, earth, mud, straw, sheep’s wool, cork, wood fibers, etc.
Sustainability. In itself, Bioconstruction is sustainable, since it promotes a balance between the environmental, the economic and the social, making the project viable, fair and bearable for the system that supports it. The forms of construction chosen and the materials used come from renewable and nearby sources, to minimize the carbon footprint and the use of energy from fossil fuels.
In a Bioconstruction project, the following are taken into account: the environment and the climate, the occupants and the society in which they live, the economy, to make the construction more efficient and comfortable and consume fewer resources.
Welfare. Bioconstruction promotes the health and comfort of people and the environment, by reducing polluting emissions, providing comfort in thermal, lighting, acoustic and spatial aspects.
